In 2008 I finally decided that my quest for a truly awesome all-around vehicle that was fun, practical, really fast, efficient, and affordable to maintain could never possibly be met. Money being no object, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S could have fit the bill nicely, but efficient? No way. Affordable to maintain? Not a chance. I decided to split my dream into managable parts and buy two separate vehicles. The first would be practical, comfortable, and dependable. The second? Just ridiculously fast.

Nissan Murano

2009 Nissan Murano S

After I carefully considered 39 different vehicles and narrowed the list down to two final contenders, the 2nd gen. Murano beat out the 2009 Toyota RAV4 on style and comfort. Based on Altima underpinnings, the Murano is smooth, stable, quiet, comfortable, roomy, and even quite respectably quick.

Porsche 944 Turbo

Out of 15 modest-budget contenders I evaluated plus a few newer vehicles, the Porsche 944 Turbo rocketed to the top of the list, unbeatable especially for the price. With a near-perfect front/rear weight balance, the car handles like a dream with slight on-power oversteer and will hold its own against a $50,000 modern Boxster or Cayman.
